EU. Should DK and SE join the banking union?

Should Denmark and Sweden join the banking union? In joint work with Dirk Schoenmaker, we try to find an answer to this important question. Hardly surprising, there are pros and cons… Denmark and Sweden are both members of the European Union (EU) but have not yet adopted the euro as their currency.
Therefore, the question about participation in decision-making on equal terms with members of the euro area is crucial for lasting membership.
Maybe a ‘flexible’ membership should be considered: joining now and exiting later without big costs if membership does not live up to expectations… Our paper can be found here. And a shorter version, published in Danish in Dagbladet Børsen, can be found here. My other recent op-eds can be found here.
